October 2014 ASHRAE Meeting Notice

Subject: Energy Efficient Design Utilizing Chilled Beams

Date: Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Speaker: Mark Muhlstein, LEED AP, Midwest Mechanical Solutions - Partner

Speaker Biography:

Mark Muhlstein started his HVAC path with a BSME degree from Iowa State University in Ames, IA. He moved to MN in 2002 and joined with Midwest Mechanical Solutions as an inside sales engineer. In 2004 he moved to outside sales calling on contractors, engineers, and owners. Mark went on to get his LEED AP accreditation in 2008 and has been involved in dozens of LEED certified projects. Mark focuses on HVAC design on both the hydronic and ventilation air side designs primarily in the commercial and industrial markets. He has extensive experience on energy efficient "green" designs and geothermal systems. Mark is very involved in ASHRAE and has served on the House, Website, Life Safety, and Electronic Communications (ECC) committees.

Chilled beams are being used at an ever increasing rate in the United States. The energy savings the system offers is making it more and more attractive to building owners as utility rates rise and government pressure to work toward “Net Zero” buildings increases. When understood and designed correctly, they can offer a very efficient, low maintenance, and space saving design to building owners.

The presentation will cover the following items:

  • Fundamentals of designing with chilled beams
  • Communicate the energy saving advantages of using chilled beams
  • Show system comparisons of chilled beams vs. other system types
  • Discuss the impact of the new ASHRAE 170-2008 addendum H related to healthcare applications
  • Discuss pitfalls and design considerations when using chilled beams
