Speaker Biographies:

Al Kubly is a Section Head for the Facilities Operations group at Mayo Clinic Rochester with 29 plus years of experience managing buildings on the Rochester campus. Al oversees approximately 8.5 million sq. ft. of outpatient clinic buildings and is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) through the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE).

Jon Lonneman is a licensed mechanical engineer with twenty years of experience in design of commercial HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and control systems. For the last three years Jon has been with Mayo Clinic as a facilities/design engineer.

Al and Jon are part of the team that developed and implemented the water management program in effect on the Rochester campuses.


For the past three years Mayo Clinic Rochester has worked to implement a water quality program with the goal to manage the risk of waterborne pathogens to our patients, visitors and staff. The presentation will provide an overview of what the risks are in a potable water system along with methods of control and validation testing design plans.  The presentation will also address managing risk during construction and the impact of plumbing system design on water quality.

  • History of water quality at Rochester.

  • Impact of ASHRAE 188 and requirements of Joint Commission.

  • Overview of Legionella, other waterborne pathogens and testing methods.

  • What is HACCP and how it affects water quality program.

  • Implementing the plan during construction.

  • Lessons learned: Impact on design, product selections, water usage and operation.

  • Sharing what we have learned to benefit others.
